This year and in fact this week , in particular, I find it strange that suddenly we have friends from the US and Canada visiting just this weekend. I mean there are 52 weekends in the year but why is it that only this weekend is convenient for all of them to meet me?
Another thing I find really strange is that these people who adopted different countries, different cultures and different people as their families have a strange hankering to meet up with people from the past. Now why would they do that? While I am only too happy to meet up with old friends and family, I find it strange that those very same people who find living in India a drag, who are happy to be away from their pesky parents and inquisitive aunts and uncles, who can’t bear the filth, the corruption, the dirt and everything that is India, go out of their way to come year after year to this land they so hate and meet the people they so badly want to distance themselves from …………
Perhaps it makes them feel good to go back to their sanitized, perfect existences where the only people they know are those they choose to know, the places they live and work in are picture book perfect and they can come back and look at all of us with pity and disgust and feel happy that they are no more Indian.
This evening I will be meeting up with a school friend, spoke to a dear family friend and will be entertaining two friends of Hubby dear. I am thrilled to be entertaining them but am apprehensive about the water that is bottled , the “sodas” , the veggies, the chicken and the over all stuff. Will my house be too cluttered? Will the wind drop and the living room get stuffy? Will it rain and will my guests get wet on their way home? Will the lift behave itself? Will they all enjoy themselves?
Well, I just have to hope that they are indulgent and overlook the shortcomings of my home and hospitality.
