Twenty- five Seven

Personally speaking

Do tv debates influence government policies?

Night after night Hubby dear is busy surfing channels only to find Barkha Dutt, Rajdeep Sardesai, Sonia Singh and the ultimate Chief Justice of India Mr. Arnav Goswami ask various panelists their opinion on several matters of political and social importance. Like everything in life, the topics are seasonal. Last December, the favour of the month was rape; currently it is the hanging of Afzal Guru and I can see the Helicopter scandal slowly getting ready to fly off the tv screen and occupy centre screening space.

Night after night these TV anchors debate issues with predictable panelists till I actually begin to get a headache with the constant bickering, one up manship and shoddy arguments put forth vociferously  with scant heed to politeness and basic civility. But what really amazes me is how this form of
Journalism can be remotely called entertaining and least of all, does it have any bearing on government policy? Arnav , particularly puts forth impassioned pleas asking, nay demanding, answers on behalf of the tax paying citizens of India, but I ask you, Arnav Goswami, does any one in Government even watch your show? Can you prove even once how your uncovering a story has brought forth any kind of social reform?

Sadly, these so called provocative shows are mere slanging matches which serve no purpose other than providing a platform for some noisy haranguing.
