Ever since Bombay became Mumbai things have got steadily worse. My mother in law tells me stories of how she used to fall asleep lulled by the waves beating against the shore. And no, her house was not on the sea front but a good 500 m away on one of Bombay’s arterial roads. She also recalls Sunday mornings when the Municipal vans washed down the streets!
How tragic to think that progress has only made things worse. Instead of the trams and tongas that took forever to get anywhere, we now have the pleasure of boiling in luxurious cars that are stuck four deep in the middle of rush hour.
The beautiful bungalows and wide streets have given way to warrens of tiny box-like apartments accessed by narrow pot holed lanes lined up with cars, buses, trucks shops, hawkers and street dwellers.
So for those of you who mourn the demise of this gracious city, and for those of you who have no idea of what it was, please follow this link.
