For many years I wondered why the Congress party kept its fellow Indians in the Dark Ages with a complete lack of transparency and secrecy shrouding the only Indian family in this populous country by not allowing television into this country. After all it was well known that TV was a popular tool of mass education and also an effective family planning device ( yes, I kid you not, this was one of the reasons for the Indian economy’s dismal performance according to our Text Book of  Development Economics ).  It was only Indira Gandhi’s desire for the her countrywomen to admire her wonderful collection of handloom sarees that prompted her to allow colour TV not only in the city of Delhi but also the entire country!

But like every other Pandora’s Box, this idiot box proved that Indians are not truly idiotic and even though they lapped up Mahabharata on Sunday after Sunday, and Ghar ghar ki Kahani, TV truly demystified not only Indian politicians and celebrities but  made the people aware of the great scams that they were made to suffer under the guise of development, progress and national unity.

Last evening’s TV fare –  the Gandhi family spat which we all know is the greatest Mahabharat of modern India and a mother’s passionate plea to save “her” country from irreparable harm by those who don’t understand  India as well as the family does, coming in the wake of disclosures of Sanjay Baru’s  ineffective PM have only served to remove the blinkers from the eyes of the Indian public. Of course there are those who refuse to shift loyalties and still believe in the Congress and its ideology even though it means promoting “Pasta for Nashta” ( but then in a Democracy we are all free to have our own choice ) but recent TV viewing has shown that what was formerly a National Circus has now degenerated into a pure and simple Family Feud.

Long live the family! Long live India!
