No matter how much I grumble when I’m stuck in a traffic jam,
No matter how much I flinch when I see Indians behaving obnoxiously in public,
No matter how disgusted I feel when I read stories about rape or child abuse
This morning when I saw the Prime Minister lay a wreath at the memorial for the Unknown Soldier,
When I saw the brave Indhu get a medal recognising the valour of her slain husband,
When I saw the cavalcade of horses escorting the Presidential cortege
When I saw the contingent of Indian women march past
And finally when the planes overhead flew past,
I felt proud to be Indian.
I felt happy when I saw the tricolour fly open in our garden
Even though the contingent of watchmen sang the National Anthem with tuneless rhythm,
And we all winced when we heard them drown out our voices
I felt proud to be Indian.
Happy Republic day
