Cricket was supposed to be a gentleman’s game and an English one at that but ever since that game was introduced to the colonies particularly those of the Indian subcontinent it has changed beyond recognition. For starters not only has this game been totally democratised but it had been adopted as the official religion of the region and had transformed itself into a veritable Tamasha or the great Indian circus with its modern avatar of ODIs that go by various acronyms and monikers.





Today as I sit in the verandah I can’t help marvel at the peaceful scene playing out before me on the brown green lawns of Azad maidan.

Doesn’t this almost bucolic scene give lie to a life in the middle of a bustling metropolis?
