Dubai’s hidden gem

Shopping, entertainment and pleasure are the words that come to mind when one thinks of Dubai. But there is another part of Dubai that is a must see for all travellers who want to savour the history and culture of a city.

The Al Fahidi Neighbourhood or Bastakiya as it was formerly known is pure delight and not very well known to the regular pleasure seeking tourist. However, I would strongly recommend this area which is  restored and tidied up. It is home to many quaint museums like the Coffee Museum which showcase traditional Arab life. Many of the homes are converted into cafes and lodges ( like the famous XVA) and boutiques selling traditional wares like enamel plates, camel tooth boxes, calligraphy, leather tooling, bead work , lamps and of course modern art  as in Majlis Gallery.

Take a taxi till the Al Musalla Roundabout at Bur Dubai and spend the next few hours just wandering about this magical neigbourhood.

  1. Seems every time I turn around someone here in Ireland is heading to Dubai, often for educational purposes.

    1. Dubai is great value for money especially for Europeans though it is expensive for us. Dubai has all the amenities of the first world at prices the first world can afford.

      1. It often comes down to economics; no surprise that so many of my neighbors are now your neighbors :)
