Shopping for shampoo- Spoiled for choice

A shelf full of shampoos

Who would have thought that shopping for shampoo would be a daunting task?

I remember in the good old days when my granny used to send me to the local banya across the road and get back a bottle of shampoo. And that was it. A bottle of Tata Shampoo that was the companion to the bottle of Tata Coconut oil. Neither of these brands are available these days as I discovered the other day when I had  run out of shampoo.

I went down to the chemists and was simply stunned at the shelf full of shampoos that stared back at me:

There were all kinds of shampoos : Ayurvedic, Herbal, Organic, Synthetic( of course these weren’t touted as such)

There were all kinds of brands :  Dove, Tresemme, Garnier, Kerastase,Nyle, Biotique, Himalaya , Kama and many, many more.

And if this weren’t  enough there were shampoos for  different hair concerns : dry hair, shiny hair, damaged hair, normal hair, anti hair fall, anti dandruff, anti frizz , shampoo for dyed hair, shampoo for chemically treated hair, shampoo that was enriched with protein, keratin, and more!

Which shampoo do I choose?

So I asked the distinctly bored looking assistan ,” Kaunsa shampoo mere liye chalega? ” (Which shampoo will do for me?)

He looked at me with an expression that translated as  “Duh?”

I persisted, “mere baal girte hain ( I suffer from hair fall) , maine treatment karvaya( I have cysteined it), aur mere baal dry or damaged hain ( and my hair is dry and damaged) . Toh main kya karoo? ( so what do I do? ) ”

He turned to the shelf and pulled  out a shampoo for hair fall, another for damaged and dry hair and yet another for hair that has been treated. ” koi bhi le lo, ya toh teeno le lo” ( you can take any one of these or all of them)

This time I gave him a look that said “Duh”.

  1. I’m very bad at selecting shampoos…For quite sometime I kept on trying different brands ..Then there was a phase where I thought what’s the point since my hair is anyways not changing into Rapunzel’s tresses..These days the responsibility is with my sister, she chooses and I use :)

    1. Well, from what I gather you are a new mom and must be finding it hard to get time to do mundane things. And sometimes it is better to let someone else do the choosing….

  2. I smiled, thinking, “In India, too”? Here, I think, some drug stores (what we call “chemists”) have entire aisles of shampoo and conditioners, of every type and fragrance. The latest here in the United States are “*naked*” shampoos, which don’t have preservatives, parabens, or silicones.

    1. Ah well, I suppose this is a world wide marketing trick to confuse customers

  3. When I visited India I didn’t have the chance to go to a chemist and see for myself, but you have some very familiar brands to us. We’re in the same boat here, with so many different choices, and clerks are not beauticians–they are clueless.

    1. Yes, most of the MNC’s sell the same brands in India and you’re right about the clerks not being beauticians but I’d think a salesman would have some idea of the products he’s selling

  4. Haha, I can so relate to this! My husband has banned me from buying any more shampoos. Got in different brands and choices. :P
