So this momentous day has come and gone. Considering that it comes once in every four years, it is a special day especially for those born on this day because they actually get to celebrate their birthday on the 29th of February rather than on the 1st of March. ( Like friend’s sister who celebrates her 60th today. Being 60 is special and being 60 on the 29th is really special. I hope the family had a grand celebration.) But for me,it was just like any other day of cooking, cleaning and getting things done.
What’s the big deal about the 29th? Apart from the fact that it is a device to make up one lost day. But then again, this is another mystery. How does the day get lost? And what is being made up? I know this has been explained but frankly, I just can’t understand it. Time is a creation of man, at least the measurement of it, so why can’t it be done accurately?
But as the French say, c’est la vie. This is just one of those things that happen.
There are several myths associated with the Leap Year, and the most well known one is the fact that this is one occasion when a woman can propose to a man ! Today this doesn’t seem like a big deal when very often the first step down the aisle is initiated by several women in this day and age- however, it was a big deal in the days this custom originated.
And as the day draws to a close, I can’t help think of how we make such a fuss about something only to realise that it is quite ordinary after all. For some strange reason I remembered all the hype about Y2K and the problems it was supposed to bring. Do you even remember that? It was supposed to be the end of the world, the day when all the computers crashed and all kinds of doomsday scenarios were to play out. But what was the reality ? Nothing.
So bye bye 29th Feb and see you again after four years.
