A is for Ashtray
A is for Ashtray
Finding things from A to Z in my home was harder than I thought.  What is A for?  A can be Anything ?? I looked around and found an ashtray. Now that’s something I can write about as it may soon be a thing from the past.

Once upon a time, ashtrays were everywhere in private homes,  hotels  clubs and restaurants. However, with dire warnings about “Cigarette smoking being injurious  to health”printed prominently on every packet of cigarettes along with scary photographs of smoke damaged lungs, ashtrays have now become a thing of the past.

In my home too, the  ASHTRAYS disappeared when Hubby Dear stopped smoking over three decades ago. Occasionally, they would be taken out for the guest who couldn’t live without a puff but today I literally have to hunt them out and insist that they be used in the verandah, far away from the grandchildren crawling about.

These are some of the ashtrays that remain from our once vast collection: The brass ashtray on the left made from a recycled brass shell is easily recognized by anyone with an Indian Army connection; the terracotta tortoise with sea shells is a piece of whimsy  that crawled into the house by accident and the crystal one is a gift from our Polish business associates that once occupied pride of place on our coffee table.

Gone are the days when people could blow smoke rings in public and smokers are confined to restricted areas. It won’t be long before tobacco goes out of fashion and ashtrays too.

Do you think future historians will puzzle over these artefact one day?

I was used to ashtrays at my uncles home, but that is the story of the past. Now he isn’t no more. Smoking reduced him to ashes.

Ha! That’s a great line for promoting the evils of smoking.

  3. Some decades back, when we were growing up, the ashtray had a pride of place in the living room but, now serves as keepsakes and mementoes of times past. Nice collection there, btw :)

  4. So true about Ashtrays. My house has always been the non-smoking zone in our community but my dad was really eager to stock the house with vintage things and ashtrays were one of them. However, my mother has given all the ashtrays to relatives and cousins who smokes, given the fact that the ashtrays reminded us of the non-smoking dad we had!

    Amazing post!!!

And ashtrays.. Such fancy pieces come in the market these days, but the antique ones or the ones we have in our collection from years always hold a special place.. don’t they?

  12. Good morning, what a fun blog. I stopped smoking in January and I too had some unique ashtrays. When I moved abroad I left them all behind, but I’ve often wondered if one day some archaeologist would puzzle over what their use was. I miss some of the prettier artsy ones. But health will be better for the loss. Thanks for sharing, this was fun!

  13. wow that’s a really fancy ashtray. In my home ashtrays were only for guests since none of my family member smoked. I think it would make a gorgeous flower pot for succulents… or even bonsai :D

  15. I hate smoking and can hardly bear anyone doing that around me. But the designs of Ashtrays have always fascinated me. Does the intricate design of an ashtray makes smoking a beautiful sin, I wonder!

  18. Ashtrays are definitely becoming a thing of the past, and good riddance to those smelly cigarettes! However I must admit some of them are quite pretty (when cleaned of their butts), and one of my favorite cafés in Montreal had quite a collection of retro ashtrays in some extremely crazy shapes and colors. I suspect they bought them all at Goodwill.

Looking forward to finding out more about the objects in your home! :)

It’s strange how ashtrays are almost always attractive and collectible. To encourage smoking maybe?

  20. Those ashtrays are beautiful works of art! :) I have a large crystal one which now serves as a receptacle for potpourri and a bunch more shoved in the back of a kitchen drawer. Smoking has become totally unacceptable indoors, which is a good thing. Glad I quit years ago!

  21. I have never thought about it, but you are correct ashtrays really are a thing of the past. I have never even owned an ashtray. I can’t imagine a visitor even asking me for an ashtray.

That’s kind of a cool looking ashtray you have there.

  22. That’s quite a collection. Glad smoking is no longer something that is encouraged in homes. I remember a time when Dad, although not a smoker, would keep a fancy brass cigarette box in the sitting room, with the works! One evening, when my parents were out, my brothers and I helped ourselves to a couple of smokes! ;)
