Strange as it may sound, despite 2 visits to New York (albeit day trips) 0ver 4 visits to the US, I never managed to visit the Statue of Liberty. Now every tourist knows this is a major omission, something that had to be rectified.
So this time, a visit to the monument was on top of my list. Especially since I was spending 12 weeks in New Jersey.
Visiting the Statue of Liberty
This Monday seemed to be the best day and I kept my fingers crossed that the projected weather forecast would prove wrong. Luckily it did and the day was bright and sunny. By noon it was as hot as a Mumbai summer day.
We set off later than planned to avoid the rush hour morning traffic into the City. Besides being off season, we had a very good chance of getting tickets for the ferry ride and entrance to the actual statue.
After a bit of a search for the ticket office, we boarded Miss Freedom but not before a bit of a scare.
As my handbag passed through the metal detector, it was stopped. My heart sank. What could have alarmed the Security?
I soon found out .
Buried under my sweater and jacket , cheek by jowl with my wallet was my little brown catch all. They opened it and fished out the contents.

The security guard opened each lipstick, turned open the perfume case , zipped up the little purse and said
” You got good taste Mama, ” and let me pass.
But my heart sank a second time when another check revealed the same contents. Luckily the female security guard stepped in and confirmed that my make up was harmless.
I heaved sigh of relief and swore never again to carry my makeup with me when I visit any American landmark.
