The Peshwa
I’ve always been a history buff and currently am reading ‘The Peshwa” by Ram Sivasankaran. This is the story of Baji Rao Peshwa, one of the greatest Maratha warrio
rs. History is a great teacher and Maratha history is dear to my heart. The Maratha Empire established by Shivaji in the mid 17th Century was ruled by his son Sambhaji and grandson Shahu after him. But, if truth be told, the real power behind the throne vested in their Commanders in Chief otherwise known as the Peshwa.
Baji Rao Peshwa, the second of the Peshwas was considered a great tactician and general. This book is about his struggle to establish his hold over the empire.
These are the two sentences from p.160
Mahesh, one of the new recruits in the Maratha Frontier Guard, had only recently been conscribed and shipped over from his hometown, Aurangabad to stand watch at the border. Over the past many months, there had been sporadic raids on villages and towns lying along the northern frontiers of the Confederacy.
Do the Marathas repel the attacks? Or do they succumb?
Those who know Maratha history, already know the answer but for those who don’t, this book might be worth a read to find out.
I am linking this up with #TeaserTuesday
