Looking out my window
I see light breaking
and know that
The sun is just up.
But where is it hidden
In a shroud of smog ?
A raucous crow flies into the frame and rushes out to catch some food he finds below before another one gets the worm
That’s wriggling in the filth and garbage.
And beneath, I see a tired city, slowly waking up to another day.
The once majestic buildings with curlicues and Corinthian columns are coated with dust
Peeling paint and falling plaster hint at a quickly fading glory.
A few tired trees stand bravely facing the onslaught of rampant construction that ravage this once verdant hill.
From my window I see a city that was once a bustling town
It was a city where fortunes were made , where lives were lived in uncomplicated happiness
But now enshrouded in a mist of smoke and dust , it’s crawling forward to a new age dawn
With fingers of unfinished buildings reaching obscenely higher to reach a sky it cannot see.
Outside my window cool breezes of the morning drive away the darkness of the night
I hope these winds of change bring hope and joy and blow away the descending smog that’s slowly killing
My once beautiful city,
Day by day
