Some like it hot and some like it cold, but if you ask me, I’d go for hot any day.
I sit in the corner of the living room , far away from the hills where I was born.
But I like it here
alone in splendid isolation,
getting a full view of the room and all those in it.
For years and years I’ve been around
both here and in my previous home, far away from the sea.
Away in the hills when I specially came to my own
on wintry days
when bits of coal were fed to me.
So that I in turn could heat the brew made of tropical spice and all that’s nice.
To bring in warmth to frozen souls.
I’ve been around for 100 years or may be more
And take pleasure in the fact that long after the people in this living room have gone
I shall move to another home.
And once again, I’ll take my place in the corner of a living room
Or perhaps take pride of place in a tea house
with my carved copper shell all brightly gleaming
I’ll be dreaming of the days when hot
Kahwa lay in my belly steaming.
For I’m not just an ordinary kettle that whistles when the tea is done.
I’m really made of special mettle that distinguishes me
From the ordinary lot.
