• Way back in school, my dear friend Nilu invited me to her cousin’s wedding lunch at a community hall. That was my first experience of eating at a Bohri Thaal, the memory of which lasted forever. So when my girls grew up, I shamelessly invited myself and my family to Nilu’s house for a traditional Bohri Thaal. And what a feast it was ! Starting out with a pinch of salt and then a huge slab of vanilla ice cream as the first course. My girls couldn’t believe it but that’s the way a Bohri meal begins – with something sweet followed by something savoury in as many courses as the host feels like providing.

But all this is hard work right from getting the food organised to serving it course by course. So I was glad when Anna Shetty provided me withthe contact details of the Bohri Kitchen, a family run outfit that provides genuine, freshly cooked thaals or individual dishes . On Saturday the thaal is different and offers delicacies like dabba gosht and cream tikka.

Bohri cuisine is by far the tastiest non vegetarian food I’ve had so far and I was looking forward to my Thaal

My Bohri thaal wasn’t the traditional round tray that seats many people, but a disposable plastic meal tray with a spoon included

On the menu today was doodhi halwa ( passable) chicken biryani ( yum) , Kashmiri aloo  ( too spicy) a raita ( not sour and perfectly cooling ) , and a Russian kebab( I’ve had better) .

The Russian kebab is a unique kebab mildly spiced and made with white sauce and bits of green bean and carrot

The Thaal was well priced at Rs 299 and efficiently delivered by Swiftgrid. As the order taker advised , it was just enough for one but we managed to share it between the two is us and feel reasonably full.

I will definitely order again but , I’ll still go for Nilu’s Thaal in a heartbeat!

  • Audacious as it sounds I want my blog to be recognised internationally. There I’ve said it now and there’s no going back.

If  Rhonda Byrnes of the revolutionary book ‘ The Secret ‘ is to be believed, all you have to do is announce your intention out loud and the Universe gives it to you.

    So Universe, are you listening?

I love the Internet and I love writing. Through blogging I can do both . Besides with blogging I have the freedom to publish what I write instantly, without sending off work for publishers/editors to accept or reject.

Blogging affords a writer the added advantage of measuring his reach through tools like Google Analytics .

The Three Goals I am setting today.

Since time is the crunch factor in my life, I’ve given myself a longer tim to achieve my goals and would like to keep  31 December 2016 as the target.

By this time I will have

    • A 25% increase in viewership
    • A 100% increase in income
    • A global presence in the Blogosphere

The steps I am taking to achieve my goals

Before the year reaches its halfway mark, I have to make a plan that will help me achieve my goals

    1. I will update my blog weekly ONLY. This will ensure that I PLAN my blog, research the topic and be more regular. So I will target a mid-week post.
    2. I will read other blogs , spending only ONE hour a day. I will not be able to spend more time but if I know I have just an hour, I will spend it in a more focused manner.
    3. I will comment on and share EVERY blog I read . This will help engaging readers and build a regular reader base.
    4. I will participate in blog hops and engage in social media sharing.

  • an empty swing stands waiting

    in a children’s park

    remembering happy times

    image for an empty swing

When sounds of  laughter  mingled with

the shrieks of joy as the

    children demanded

    “swing me high”

It it was one of a pair:

twins in blue that ruled the playground

with children queuing for their turn.

Till one day a chain snapped

brittle with rust, and lack of care

and left a child , a girl of two

    unconscious and bleeding too.

    The shocked faces

    screams of despair

    wails of ambulances

    and then a silence that

    filled the playground where

    once children did.

    the swing was brought down

    Swiftly,

    punished for a crime

    not really of its making.

That left the second one waiting

    expectantly

for the children to swing it up again.

    But the mothers eyed it

    with suspicion and left

    it all alone .

    It stands there

    Abandoned and waiting .

This was the first thought that came to mind when I saw this black and white photograph of a swing in a park. This poem is loosely based on a true life incident that had a happy end – the girl recovered from her injury but it left us all with a lifelong fear that a harmless and joyful activity can end in tears.

A lesson to be learnt from this is [ctt title=”” tweet=”check out all playground equipment carefully, which despite being in constant use may just have a loose nut or a rusty chain .” coverup=”9XBqk”]

I’m linking up with other bloggers on #Friday Reflections

This may be a bit morbid but it doesn’t reflect my mood. I’m in the middle of capturing the essence of summer with my mango pickles and jams which I will soon be posting after they’re done. For once I’m happy to be in a pickle.

    Happy weekend all!
