Strange are the ways of the Universe. Today is World Toilet Day, a fact that was brought to my notice almost at the end of the day when I managed to look at the newspaper.

Just this morning I was sitting in my bathroom, closeted with my thoughts and thanking my stars for having the luxury of this private time in a very private space.

My small little 5′ x7′ toilet assumes magnanimous proportions when I sneak out a few moments in my very busy day. How many people cherish this space I thought?

    • teenagers who used it for a secret smoke,
    • girls/boys who use it to make calls to their undesirable girl/boyfriend,
    • busy people who just grab a little time to read a few pages of a novel or grab a few lines of the newspaper before getting absorbed in a busy day
    • avid readers who actually have a library on the flush tank
And of course, people who use it for what it is meant to be used.
So while toilets are essential to maintain health and hygiene, they are also essential to nourish the soul.

  • Winning is Everything!

    WOW!

That’s all that I can really say.
I mean, I can’t imagine  that I’ve actually won the Best Blog Award!!!

So now I’m going to cover my face the way Sushmita Sen did all those years ago and begin to cry and say

    Oh My God!

I’ve been blogging for several years now and always wondered whether there was anyone reading my words out there in outer space . I mean writing in the virtual world is always different from writing on paper – where you can see your words written in ink, printed on paper. But writing on the internet? That is a completely different ball game – where you type and send your thoughts into ether hoping that someone out there sees them and reads them and appreciates you.

Considering that there are zillions of blogs out there, written by talented people, creative people, important people, funny people, thought provoking people, controversial people and of course ordinary people, I am really astounded that my blog has made it there. I am thrilled beyond belief that my oh so ordinary blog could measure up to all those incredible blogs that abound in the Universe.

I actually began blogging when it was still quite new and just about learnt that URL didn’t stand for You R Lost. I also began blogging so that I could avoid writing letters to my scattered family and friends and share with them news, views and recipes. So I called my blog ChowMiaow to talk about Chow and Miaow about stuff. But over the years many more people actually began reading my words while my family and friends stopped ! So now that I’ve won the Best Blog Award, I feel happy and vindicated that my writing has not been in vain.

All prize winners have to thank all those who made winning possible and I’d like to start by thanking my mother (who would kill me if I didn’t) and who never reads my blog, my father who always reads my blogs and calls up to tell me what I wrote was wrong, my husband who suspected that Blog was an alias for a secret lover, my children who still resent the fact that I go to the computer first thing in the morning before I even go into their room to see how they are (they are actually well and are secretly happy I ignore them) , my friends who are so lazy that they only read my Blog when it is sent to them via an email link. I would also like to thank all my English teachers who over the years taught me the correct use of language, punctuation and spelling. And lastly, this prize would not have been possible were it not for  my unknown readers and followers(who encourage me with their comments ), Blogger for creating this incredible platform that I still haven’t mastered and BlogAdda for introducing me to the wonderful world of Indian Bloggers and of course for giving me this Award!

    Thank You!

This would be My Winning Speech on being rewarded the BlogAdda Blog Award!

  • Growing Naturally

    Why some people are
happy and some people are not

There are some people in this world who amaze you with their
zen like approach to life: calm and collected they seem to face life with
equanimity, a deep inborn wisdom. There are others who are frenetic, boisterous
and noisy. Yet others are crabby, grumblers who go through life with a frown on
their faces, their minds riddled with worry, constantly battling imaginary
giants. The debate on  how much of this
attitude to life is due to nature and how much to nurture is endless and further
fuelled with new scientific thoughts and discoveries. But while our genetic
dispositions are something we have to deal with, it is a well known fact that
we are largely the products of our environment and to large extent we are what
    we eat.
    You are what you eat

Even before a child is born, the mother is advised on what
to eat and what not to eat to have a healthy child and a safe delivery. Whether
there is any scientific evidence to prove that certain foods are good or not is
not the point, what matters is that gestating mothers are encouraged to eat
foods that promote a child’s development.
Papaya and mango, fruits which are normally rich sources Vitamin C and
Beta carotene are frowned upon during pregnancy as they are supposed to induce
    abortions.
    Traditional cures for
    ancient diseases
All cultures have a system of traditional medicine and we in
    India are no different. Ayurveda
which is a lifestyle science assuring the well being of human beings is based
on herbal and vegetal products apart from a strong emphasis on dietary habits
and proper physical activities. Most of the cures prescribed by Ayurveda are
handed down by word of mouth and even recorded in ancient texts like the Charak
    Samhita
      and unlike modern systems of
medicine, the cures are more prophylactic than curative. Thus you will be
advised to have soaked methi seeds to
get a healthy back, sprinkle sesame seeds in your food to improve the health of
    your heart.
    Why Ayurveda has a
    bad  name
    Unfortunately, the
system of Ayurveda has been discredited because it has largely been practiced
by un licenced hakims and vaids and scoffed at by modern day
medical practitioners as hocus pocus and mumbo jumbo only because there is no
documented evidence (clinical trials and  bioequivalence studies) conducted on Ayurvedic
products the way they are carried out on chemically processed or synthetic
    products.

    But all matter is
    made up of molecules

We tend to forget that all matter is made up of chemical
substances be it natural or synthesized so in a way even herbal products are
made of biochemicals and extracts of roots and herbs too have organic origin .
The only difference then between Ayurvedic preparations and non-ayurvedic
preparations are that Ayurvedic medicines are made out of naturally occurring products.

    Benefits of Ayurveda

Since modern medicine does not really offer a cure for most
diseases but actually offers only symptomatic relief through either medication or surgery, I would
definitely support the use of Ayurveda particularly for chronic ailments which actually aims to solve the problem at its roots. It is
a well known fact that a home made concoction of herbs and spices downed with a
spoon of honey is a better alternative to cough mixtures which often leave the
    patient drowsy.
    Ayurveda and Baby’s
    growth

It is a well known fact that :
    • Soaked almonds early in the morning are a
      great brain tonic
    • ·
A regular breakfast of ragi or nachani porridge
is the healthiest source of Vitamins
    • ·
A paste of nutmeg applied on the nostrils dries
      up a runny nose
    • ·
Sipping a  decoction of ginger  and lemon juice and  salt is the best to settle an upset tummy
    • ·
Turmeric powder is a great antiseptic
    • ·
Cow’s ghee is a great source of Omega 3 fatty
      acids

There are so many Ayurvedic products that even if manufactured in a modern way (such as Adulsa) retain the benefits of their original source, and help young children combat disease in a “healthier” way. So while I would not whole heartedly endorse the use of Ayurveda to the exclusion of all forms of medicine, I definitely feel that if administered rightly Ayurveda can definitely help children grow the way they are meant to grow naturally and one need not blindly stuff children with Calcium supplements and iron tonic to combat low bone density and anaemia.
