Actually this post would be more appropriately called Tuesday Musings though I started thinking about it on Monday- my mother’s new android phone.
I am not ashamed that confess to the universe that not a day passes when I don’t talk to mother. Of course it’s not always a meaningful conversation nor is it very long but our daily dose of banter is just enough to touch base and to ensure that all’s well in our worlds.
So when there was no call from my mother on Monday I was a bit worried. I finally called her and was shocked when she answered on her NEW ANDROID phone!!
“What ? Why do you need smart phone?”
“Because I’m smart!” She wise cracked and also said that all her friends had one and that one of them actually said she’d stopped calling her because she didn’t have whatsapp!!!!
Now that was a real zinger. I never imagined that octogenarians would be communicating on whatsapp- sharing gossip and photos with one another. Not only does this make them more independent of children who refuse to let them peek at the photos sent on devices that they cannot operate but it also allows them to communicate with others who are equally hard of hearing.
My mother loves her new Samsung galaxy something or the other that was gifted to her by my brother and his wife. And it won’t be long before she masters all the features and ventures into mobile apps that will have her competing with her 30 something grandchildren!
Most people are technophobes and with failing vision and poor hearing, arthritic fingers and memory lapses older people are reluctant to try out new gadgets, preferring to rely on others who are techno savvy so I was happy to learn about my mother and her friends and their smart phones. After weeks of hearing about senior citizens being mugged, suffering from painful diseases , living lives that are hardly worth living, it is indeed heartening to know that some octogenarians have not lost their zeal for learning and want to keep pace with the rest of the world.
