Image for what will I be

Does a One year old know what she’ll grow up to be ?

Many a parent wonders what his child will grow up to be. Many children too wonder what they will grow up to be. After 5 decades on this planet , I still don’t know what I want to be so I was quite intrigued when Daughter No 1 said that according to the Chinese, the child himself has an idea of what he will grow up to be.

    How is this possible?

Simple really, on the child’s first birthday, each adult brings along an object that represents a profession. E.g. a running shoe means an athlete, a saucepan means a housewife ( you get the drift don’t you?)

Now, this is not a simple forecast or wish fulfilment. These objects  representing the profession are chosen according to the traits the child has exhibited so far and placed before the child for it to choose instinctively.

Last Friday we celebrated Ms. Papaya turning  ONE . Long after Wow Dinga and Po had gone home ( they would have grabbed the objects) and ruined the game, based on our observation of her personality traits and likes and dislikes thus far, we placed before her :

    • two pens
    • a ball
    • a plier
    • a book
    • a syringe
    • a saucepan
    • dark glasses and a brush
    • a toy piano

Slightly sceptical , we waited  with baited breath. What will she choose? The book was her favourite book and she loved the ball too. Surprisingly, Ms. Papaya sat in front of the objects,  pondered over the choices in front of her and then wiggled determinedly towards the pens, picking them up and grinning in triumph.

Now we’ll have to wait for  at least twenty more years to see if she knew what she was wanted to grow up to be at age One!

  • The other day, I opened my cupboard and saw things in a new light. I had too much stuff. Most of it, I didn’t need.

I realised that this is the case with a lot of things in my life. To begin with, I have far too much weight I do not need.

I have many clothes I never wear.

I have books that lie for years un-read

But more than that, I have worries in my head that keep me tossing and turning in bed

Why did X stop talking to me?

Did I do something to annoy Y so?

Will my party be a success?

How will I tell Q what I really think?

I’m not the only one who worries so – we all have stuff that needs to go:

Petty jealousies, imagined slights, imputed gestures,

Old arguments, long lasting envy, bitter memories,

Isn’t it time we let things go? Image for letting things go

  • Image for gratitude
There is always something to be thankful for.

All through the month of May, as the earth was heating up, white clouds formed in the sky, sometimes turning dark and threatening but often just floating by. There were lots of dark clouds in my otherwise sunny life – the shortage of domestic help, the shortage of water, the frequent break downs of the lift and my weird and  irritating ailments. I often wondered what on earth did I feel gratitude for? But like all dark clouds, mine had silver linings too –

    • Help! While I was struggling with domestic chores, I am grateful that P turned up as did R especially since Bayda’s sticky knee is threatening to get progressively worse.
    • Health issue –  While I am not suffering from any ailment ( Thank God) I’m getting on and find myself suffering from the most irritating symptoms .But I’m grateful that my family has plenty of  doctors  whom I can call upon and enjoy access to the best medical facilities and doctors.
    • While most of the country is facing a water shortage, I am grateful that I don’t have to walk miles to collect a bucket of water and wonder when my next bath will be. I can actually let the babies cool off in the evening with a quick splash in the basin
    • And lastly, despite the nights when I toss and turn because of worry, or can’t sleep when my body aches, or when a baby’s crying keeps me up, or when I just fall asleep exhausted, I’m grateful for the life I have, busy, busy, busy with not a spare moment to think .
