I was walking down to Babulnath the other day when I noticed an archway between two buildings announcing ‘Pop-up Hut’. Being naturally curious, I stepped inside and found myself walking down a narrow tarpaulin covered alley way ending up at a hole in the wall of a ‘restaurant’ with a spoon for a handle.

The alley way is cleverly disguised with press releases , reviews and posters

This funky little restaurant is more of a takeaway place since it barely has a work counter and a display counter squeezed in what obviously seems like a small room at the back of an old corner building .

Currently ice creams seem to be the flavour of the month with delicious fruit flavours from ifruit a healthy ice cream option available in Ghatkopar and Kandivali.

But this is not a regular option as Pop-up Hut has ‘a new taste every week’. So hurry up and grab the cone before ifruit melts away.

This very new concept is yet another way in which Mumbai reinvents itself every now and then . How many times have you wished for a menu change in your favourite eatery ? Well now you not only get a whole new menu but also a whole new taste.

Pop up but is in the alleyway of Kwality house on the way to Crossword at Kemps Corner . This unique concept not only features established brands and eateries but will also feature home makers and small caterers .

How Raghuram Rajan got me thinking about my Virtual Reality #FridayReflections

Reality and the virtual world.

Last evening , at the launch of Dr. Harinder Kohli’s new book ” The World in 2050” , at the Asia Society meeting, I heard a mind blowing statement by Dr. Raghuram Rajan: economic projections 30 years ago have been proven wrong simply because no one ‘predicted’ a Virtual World. The emergence of this unimagined technology has changed the way the world does business, it has changed our reality. It has impacted societies and even created a new social order – of haves and have nots – those who have Social Media accounts and those who do not.

This technological frontier has opened up a new Pandora’s box of paranoia and fears perception replacing the threat of ‘real’ immigrants who can take up your jobs with ‘virtual’ robots . This got me thinking about a world that does not exist yet still exists in parallel. For instance, I have “friends” on FB and blogging networks with whom I share my deepest thoughts though they aren’t really known to me. I enjoy these interactions and feel a sense of loss as I do in the real world, when I don’t. I buy most of my groceries on line and last month actually resorted to home cooked meals delivered through an online service.

I hardly visit libraries any more and haven’t opened an encyclopedia since Google became so easily accessible. A lot of my learning these days is via the virtual world and most of my memories are stored in a Cloud. The Banks want me to use the ATM for cash withdrawls and taxis are willing to be paid with the swipe of a card.

Hardly anyone prints photos any more and it won’t be long before people whip out electronic albums like they do Kindles and Kobos. Streaming movies and music has changed the way we entertain ourselves and applications like Practo keep our health in check.

It’s been a week now since I woke up to a damp front road. There was a faint smell of wet earth that soon vanished with the hope that the rains had come .

The sky is overcast while Bombay swelters in the heat

The clouds are gathering but not a drop of rain still !

The weather forecasters are wrong as usual and we just have to watch and wait.
