    A shelf full of shampoos

Who would have thought that shopping for shampoo would be a daunting task?

I remember in the good old days when my granny used to send me to the local banya across the road and get back a bottle of shampoo. And that was it. A bottle of Tata Shampoo that was the companion to the bottle of Tata Coconut oil. Neither of these brands are available these days as I discovered the other day when I had  run out of shampoo.

I went down to the chemists and was simply stunned at the shelf full of shampoos that stared back at me:

There were all kinds of shampoos : Ayurvedic, Herbal, Organic, Synthetic( of course these weren’t touted as such)

There were all kinds of brands :  Dove, Tresemme, Garnier, Kerastase,Nyle, Biotique, Himalaya , Kama and many, many more.

And if this weren’t  enough there were shampoos for  different hair concerns : dry hair, shiny hair, damaged hair, normal hair, anti hair fall, anti dandruff, anti frizz , shampoo for dyed hair, shampoo for chemically treated hair, shampoo that was enriched with protein, keratin, and more!

    Which shampoo do I choose?

So I asked the distinctly bored looking assistan ,” Kaunsa shampoo mere liye chalega? ” (Which shampoo will do for me?)

He looked at me with an expression that translated as  “Duh?”

I persisted, “mere baal girte hain ( I suffer from hair fall) , maine treatment karvaya( I have cysteined it), aur mere baal dry or damaged hain ( and my hair is dry and damaged) . Toh main kya karoo? ( so what do I do? ) ”

He turned to the shelf and pulled  out a shampoo for hair fall, another for damaged and dry hair and yet another for hair that has been treated. ” koi bhi le lo, ya toh teeno le lo” ( you can take any one of these or all of them)

This time I gave him a look that said “Duh”.

  • Chocolate wrappers

What’s that ?” the Hubby said

“Are those chocolate wrappers under the bed?”
“Of course they are,” I happily said

With not the slightest trace of guilt.

    “Are you stressed?” he asked

    That you eat in bed?

Why don’t you have a drink instead?”

So will that mean, henceforth you’ll see

Underneath my bed a bottle of whiskey?

The other day my friend F gifted me a bag of mini Toblerones among other things. With Christmas long over, I was happy for her playing Santa and decided not to share it with the rest of the family. Perhaps it has something to do with the infants in my care who happily scream and shout their frustration without the slightest concern for either my peace of mind or my ear drums. Why can’t I also remember the child within me (as all the counsellors advise us) ?

So I decided to be a BAD GIRL .

I was frankly fed up of being a good girl especially when I see some people around me literally get away by being bad, badder and even baddest.

What does being good really get you I often ask myself. I remember as a little girl, my grannie’s made Christine used to scare me with a tiny little picture that she carried with her promising me a life of fire and brimstone in the Afterworld if I was a bad girl in this life. (Of course she also added that if I became a Christian I’d be saved). And the nuns in school didn’t help either. We were told that it was goodness that mattered in life and that goodness would be rewarded in this world and the next.

So we had to be good in behaviour (kind, compassionate, understanding, empathetic, helpful, caring, honest, hard-working, diligent and selfless). Of course all these are good values and I’m glad that they were dinned into our heads day in and day out.

But honestly, when you see the scoundrels getting away with all the bad things that they do, don’t you wonder if you should let goodness stand on its head?

And, besides , what’s wrong with the guilty pleasure of eating chocolate in bed? Pretty harmless.

For those who don’t remember, I’m sharing Donna Summer’s 1979 classic with all of you.

  • I  have been blogging for several years and find that my blog isn’t really going anywhere. In an attempt to unlock the riddle, I have subscribed to several blogs that promise to improve traffic, help with SEO key words, increase readership, and of course the most elusive of all – earn revenue.

Suddenly last week my mail box was filled with   “TIPS on how to make your blog grow”. Topping the list was the advice to have catchy titles with several templates which you could customise appropriately , and la voila you had a catchy title. Chief among the templates for catchy titles was the suggestion that Titles with  Numbers and How To posts were more likely to get traffic.

I thought I’d carry out an experiment and came up with this post.

All of us at some time in our blogging lives reach some kind of a dead end. Suddenly the creative juices seem to dry up and after posts and posts of content, you actually ask your self “What do I blog about? ”  “What does my audience really want? ”

Looking into my own Idea Bank, (which is real life itself) I came up with this list :

5 Best places to find ideas/inspiration for blog posts.

    1. The Newspaper and by extension the Television

Newspaper as source of informationI came upon this idea purely by accident this morning when I found two very interesting infographics – One on the increase of smart phones and consequent decrease of PCs and another which gave a statewise breakup of horticultural produce in India. Wow ! I thought, here I’ve already found two topics to write about in my two blogs? Why didn’t I read the newspapers all this while? I realised that  this is a no-brainer really because both these sources are rich in information that is topical and likely to be of interest to your readers. In addition, infographics can be accessed online from the newspaper’s online edition and easily cut and pasted into position!
d from the newspaper’s on line edition , making it an easy to access and use resource.television

Similarly, while television is a source of news, it also generates many topics that call for discussion such as social issues, events or people. If you are not into television news, watching entertainment programs also throw up many ideas.

    2. The Elevator or lift.

In an elevatorI live in a tall building with a very slow lift. Very often while travelling in the lift I get ideas for blogging. Sometimes it is a conversation I have with a neighbour, sometimes it is just boredom that makes me think of things . Whatever it is, being in a closed space often limits your thought process, thereby making your thinking a more intense experience. I also get ideas while waiting for the lift.

A similar resource is the lift or elevator in an office building.

    3. The restroom

As young children my brother and I made several road trips with our parents. Naturally when the car stopped, we both ran to the nearest rest rooms and came back and immediately discussed what the loos were like. Since then,I’ve found the rest room a fascinating place where people often air their views quite openly. rest room

Surprisingly this is one place where you can eavesdrop on several conversations from which you can write a blog post. Sometimes you hear one liners, wise cracks or even over hear gossip that can inspire many a post – Jealousy, adultery, embezzelment – the possibilities are endless as somehow people always feel that the others in the room are either deaf or just not interested in what is being said around them.

    4. The market place

    bazaar

For centuries the market place has been a great place for information about local happenings. Local markets or even sterile Malls are a great source for blog topics. You can discuss consumer behaviour, describe your own shopping experience, review products share information that is useful to other consumers regarding Sales/Events etc etc.

The Wet Market or vegetable market that most of us are familiar with also provides many opportunities for colourful and interesting photos

    5.The Gym

In my experience, the gym is like the local dhobighat where men and women come to wash their linen in public. What is it about the gym that lets people hang it all out? at the Gym This is another place where people tend to talk loudly about general topics. While I’m unsure about what the men talk, I know that Food and Diets are topics of great interest in the gym. Other popular topics are holiday destinations, in laws, relationship disasters , schools, children and …… you get the drift – almost any topic under the sun.

So there you have it :

If you are stuck for ideas for a blog, the best thing to do is

    1. Read the Newspaper or watch some television
    2. Visit the Rest Room often in the day
    3. Go up and down the elevator a few times
    4. Walk around the market place or a popular local Mall
    5. Hit the Gym

And of course, if you still don’t get any ideas to blog about – just give up blogging!

p.s. Do you think my experiment will succeed?
