While going home we saw the banners announcing the Independence Day Million outside the RWITC and decided to drop in and take a chance of finding a free table. It has always been a dream of mine to watch the races from the verandah of the club house and while having a leisurely lunch . Lady Luck was smiling on us and we did spend a delightful afternoon downing chilled beers and Bloody Marys , chomping away on grilled fish and chips and shooing away the fat old dog who barked crazily when the horses sped past. With the flag up the flag post, the dark clouds in the sky, the fan whirring slowly overhead, a light mist of rain occasionally coming onto our faces, it was the perfect way to spend an afternoon .
Reading books is a dying habit and bookstores are finding it hard to sell books. Actually bookstores themselves are hard to access these days particularly in big cities like Mumbai where parking is the major issue and the roads are a major health hazard to pedestrians with their potholes and all.
In order to be successful, a bookstore must be located in a residential or well populated commercial area. Both these places sadly do not have adequate parking space hence many people who would otherwise have visited bookstores do not go there unless they can access the bookstore on foot. It is no wonder then that most book sales are via the internet which offers the reader the comfort of choosing the book online and having it home delivered for free.
But in order to be a best seller, the book should be sold in book stores because it is retail selling that is taken into account while measuring a book’s popularity. But then book stores are reluctant to stock new books, especially by newbie authors who aren’t celebrities. So the publishers have no choice but to sell the books on line, consequently making it more difficult for authors to produce best sellers.
I’ve found out all this fairly recently when my cook book was published. After the initial euphoria wore off, I was inundated with calls asking where my book was available. Sadly Flipkart has still not uploaded the title on its listing, Crossword has not yet kept it in its stores but I found that it is available on Amazon.in and Popular Prakashan.
