• Indians do not canoodle in public.

Indians do not hold hands in public.

Indians do not gaze at each other in public.

The only thing Indians do uninhibitedly and unabashedly in public is defecating and urinating.

[bctt tweet=”Yet how did we manage to become 1.27 billion people?” username=”viaunishta”]

This question is particularly baffling because Indians do not do so many things in public and don’t really have much space to do them in private either.

Last night after dinner while our multi-generational family was engaged in some interactive family time, the conversation, as usual, centred around family and more family. Father-in-law and mother-in-law were in full cry apprising Daughter No 1 (who is currently visiting from the US) of family trees, family gossip, social mores and customs long antiquated and abandoned but still alive in their memories. While talking about women covering heads and why we do not cover heads, FIL came up with this pop question :

DO YOU KNOW WHY WOMEN WEAR NOSE RINGS AND TOE RINGS?

Looking at our non-plussed expressions he triumphantly came up with this explanation :

    FOR BETTER SEX.

That was a conversation stopper for sure.  However, we quickly picked up our dropped jawlines and quietly crept into our respective bedrooms. All the while, we looked down pointedly at our un-toe-ringed feet.

While I know that sex was not invented by the young and that it was vigorously practiced by our ancestors
( or we wouldn’t be here today, would we? ), I was quite amazed to find it a part of a normal U Rated after dinner family conversation, for Indians don’t talk about sex in public either. Still reeling from the shock of hearing the word SEX mentioned so openly by my octogenarian FIL, I thought that maybe he did have a point there.
    Consider this :
His mother was one of  eight daughters
He himself was one of seven siblings
My husband is one of three siblings
My own grandfather was one of seven siblings
While my own parents were one of four
    I have only one sibling.

    Also, consider this :

His grandmother and mother as did my great grandmother and grandmother, wore nose rings and toe rings every day of their lives.
His wife and my mother -in- law wore them occasionally.
His daughters and daughter -in- law wore them only on their wedding day.

His daughters and daughter-in-law have only two children each.

there is a correlation between sex and the rings on your nose and your toes.

So throw out those romantic dinners with candlelight and roses – go instead for the time and tested desi aphrodisiac, get your nose pierced and wear those rings on your toes.

p.s. Our grannies really did know best.

  • The Internet is a great place to get published especially for people like me who want to speak out and no one wants to listen………..There is a great comfort in knowing that when you press the Publish button or Send button or Upload or any other button that allows your words to go out into the Universe that you have actually spoken your mind with very little chance of anyone actually reading your words.

Or so I thought till December of last year when the words I had written on a Facebook wall was read by everyone but the person whose wall it was………It was then that I realised that Facebook is not all that simple as it seems. It can get you into
    deep
    deep
    deep
    deep
    really deep trouble.
So when our building society which is far from the co-operative society it is registered as, where everyone is always looking out to see who’s watching, who’s talking and who’s doing  WHAT,sent out all its members a circular announcing our very own Facebook  page community pages including one for with its very own secret societies ( rather childish) I had to remind myself NOT to fall into this trap yet again.
While blogging has become a great way to unburden one’s soul, the Internet has also been the reason for many misunderstandings and social boo boos because once you’ve sent your message out there into the big bad world, anyone can quote, misquote and thereby abuse you or get you into major trouble.

  •                                     People come into your life for a reason.

Whenever I am deeply upset, I remember these words of my friend Jo who often calms me with this sentence. How often are we plagued by “monsters” who somehow creep into our lives uninvited and make us do things way beyond our limitations, expectations and even patience.

Jo, who is deeply immersed in her spiritual quest for answers to the world’s unanswered questions is also clairvoyant and  a counsellor who uses the tarot  to help those in need. She is a dear friend and  all those who are lucky to know her will vouch for her infinite patience and pertinent advice. I have known her for years, as a carefree school girl, as a young mother and always as a dear friend but it is during this particularly stressful time of my life that I have come to know this other side to her and  she has been a source of great strength as have been others who help and continue to   help me with their support and willing ears.

According to  her,  we all come into this world to fulfil our karmic destinies and to learn our unlearned lessons from previous lifetimes. This is a good explanation for all of us who struggle with the question ” Why Me?” when things don’t go our way and why we continuously face problems of a similar nature. The lesson we have come to learn is timed like an Alarm on Snooze and keeps on ringing till we finally answer its call. It also rings louder each time till the final ring is closest to the ear, almost inside the head!

Recently, I found that the lesson I had come to learn in this world is not one but two: forgiveness and patience.

I hope that by the end of this lifetime I will have learned both well enough to gain freedom  from this cycle and  fulfil my karmic destiny.
