Hello and welcome to another edition of #FlavoursomeTuesdays a monthly blog hop hosted by Shilpa and me where we share food memories. While the taste and quality of the food is essential to good food memories, the right atmosphere and ambience is equally important. Daughter No. 1 and I are food explorers and love trying out new cuisines in new places.

The past few Sundays in August were spent re-discovering the bylanes of Kala Ghoda. Set in the vicinity of the dockyard, many of the commercial spaces in this area were clearing forwarding agents. Some were even godowns ! You wouldn’t imagine their humble origins seeing them  converted into trendy boutiques and quaint eateries! This place is now so hip and happening that it is one place where you can spend pleasant hours window shopping or restaurant hopping or just wandering around and savouring the magic of a bygone era.

During one of these trips Daughter No.1 discovered SEQUEL and decided  to treat Granny and me to a light bite at this trendy eatery. Sequel is one of those new age cafes that originally came up in Bandra. As you can see from the photo above, it caters to a clientele that values health food but doesn’t compromise on taste.

The minute you enter this space, you are struck by the stark beauty of its simple decor- grey cement flooring contrasting with the , brown natural wooden accents in the form of the dado and window frames. The white walls are in part smooth, and textured  with some sections of  exposed brick . But what is really the new ‘high’ in interiors are the plants  flowing down from ceiling mounted planters!

Since most people don’t want to wake up early on a Sunday, we were the only ones at the restaurant but the Staff were wide awake andattentive to a fault . Unlike most wait staff I come across these days, the waiters were conversant with the menu and could actually give helpful advice. It was a darn sight better than the annoying answer most staff give d when asked which is better ‘ Both are better !” Honestly, nothing can be more irritating than this dumb answer because what you want is help in making a choice !

Granny and I decided on the Blueberry Mango smoothie but the waiter misheard the order and got us just one. It was just as well because the thick, red viscous juice was quite heavy and too much for the two of us to have individually.

The deep,red mix of blueberry and mango  topped with chia seeds was unusual and refreshing.

Daughter No. 1 went with the green pick me up smoothie which was made of kale, celery, chocolate mint and orange . It was a surprising combination that was citrusy with a hint of chocolate mint .

We wanted to stop right there but while admiring the magnificent swirls on the table top of the large table, Daughter No1 chanced upon the Berry Apple crumble. Now all of us have a sweet tooth that is hard to control so we succumbed to temptation and shared a pot.

And what a delightful crumble it was! Moist and crumbly with just the right amount of sweetness.

Sequel offers a novel cuisine that is  nouvelle with its emphasis on organic, fresh produce to make dishes that are high on taste and health !

It is open all day long and I’d like to visit during dinner to try out some of the delicacies on offer  because Kala Ghoda at night time has a different vibe. It is silent and empty, bereft of the frenetic activity that characterise these streets at  daytime.

Where’s Sequel?

We stepped out and were waiting for the car to pick us up when we spied another cafe round the corner.

I’m sure I’ll have to come back to Kala Ghoda to try this out and make  another foodie memory . Don’t you think so?
