• Well I missed Day 10 of the UBC because of a terribly bad tummy. Now that’s not unusual in this part of the world and at this time of year but what was surprising is that I ate the same food that every one ate and the bug just caught hold of me!

But this is not about me and my runny tummy, it’s about the 10 things we have to list as Day 10 of the UBC. Like 10 things to do, see or hear.

This is rather difficult because 10 is a huge number. That’s all the fingers I have to count on. So while it is easy to come up with the BEST and only ONE thing to do, see or hear, it is a bit of a stretch to come up with 10. However, I will give it a shot with 10 discoveries that fascinate me . They are listed randomly, just as they pop into my mind.

    1. The invention of fire
    2. The discovery of the wheel
    3. Electricity and all forms of harnessing energy
    4. The automobile
    5. The automatic washing machine
    6. The aeroplane
    7. The discovery of antibiotics
    8. The computer
    9. Wireless communication
    10. Robots

Isn’t it amazing how man’s imagination has spurred him on to create things out of nothing as it were?

This is my list of 10 fascinating things in human history.

We all have bad days, but one thing is true; no cloud is so dark that the sun can’t shine through.

    Miranda Kerr

On Sunday we celebrated Little Po’s birthday and luckily it turned out well. I was supposed to make cake and sandwiches – an easy enough task. But believe it or not, the cakes were flat.

I was disheartened, disappointed and devastated. Imperfect cakes are not a novelty and in the old days, I invariably managed to pull it off with a quick fix rescue operation. But on Saturday nothing worked . In hindsight that could very well have been the problem- the old baking soda and old baking powder that didn’t work.

Sadly, I realised this after the cake was baked . Never mind, I consoled myself. I was sure the sandwiches would be perfect. After all, I’d even ordered special bread. And what could go wrong with sandwiches ? Apparently, they can. The next day my Nutella pin wheel sandwiches were a dismal failure. I had to abandon plans after the first slice of bread refused to slice. This time the fault lay in the bread – it was too fresh.

When simple things start going wrong , I have only one solution- don’t do anything. Just wait and bide your time for there are times in a person’s life when things go wrong for no reason.

Over the years I’ve observed  a strange phenomenon: things strangely go awry when the rains come pouring down. Does that happen to you?

For the past week the rain clouds have gone but the rainy day blues have not .

  • Once in a yoga class, the teacher mistakenly advised us to inspire and expire rather than inhale and exhale.

But inspire has another meaning “fill (someone) with the urge or ability to do or feel something, especially to do something creative.”

    Stories that inspire

There have been several people who have inspired me over the years . As a 6 year old I was inspired by the story of Grace Darling, a lighthouse keeper’s daughter that I remember reading about in my first Reader . This little girl’s courage of rowing out into the stormy sea fired my imagination . Here I was, mortally scared to get into a swimming pool whereas this young girl, untied her boat on a dark, stormy night and managed to save sailors who were shipwrecked!

Acts of bravery and valor hold a special appeal for me. What is it that moves a person to go beyond himself and feel passionate about a concept as abstract as king and country? What motivates people to get out of their comfort zone and work for the benefit of mankind?

What inspires an athelete to to push himself to the limit?

I think the basic human instinct to survive and move forward is what inspires one . Take the story of Robert the Bruce. This Scottish warrior was in a cave when he saw a spider try to spin a web. Six times she failed but never gave up. Till finally she did it .

    Everyday inspiration

I get inspiration from everyday heroes like my cleaning lady Divya who has a smile despite her hard day. This young lady of 35 already has three children but the other day I heard that she had left her useless, alcoholic husband to bring up her children on her own. She has a hard task ahead of her – two girls to get married off and a son who has just entered high school. She is up every morning to fill up the water for the day. She gets the lunches ready and is off to clean homes, finishing off at  7.30. Then it’s a bus ride home, purchasing some fresh vegetables and  cooking up the evening meal before calling it a day.

And  hasn’t even finished elementary school. Nor does she have the luxury of a social security net. But she the guts and courage to leave a man who drank away her money and beat her on top of it . She has the strength and faith in her ability to keep her children and their future safe . So she walked out on him.

Her story is similar to that of many Indian women who are working at menial jobs – visiting homes and earning money just to keep their own home fires burning . These women are honest, hard working and cheerful. They observe religious holidays ( and we have lots! ) with clean clothes and a special treat for their loved ones.

Divya particularly is a pleasant girl always willing to give a hand .  On the days I feel down I think of her – my living example to keep on smiling ! Image for BellyBytesThis is my post for Day 9 of the Ultimate Blog Challenge #blogboost
