• Saturn’s Curse

    Solomon Grundy,Born on a Monday,Christened on Tuesday,Married on Wednesday,Took ill on Thursday,Grew worse on Friday,Died on Saturday,Buried on Sunday.That was the end,Of Solomon Grundy

All of us of a certain generation are familiar with this nursery rhyme . At least I remember saying it with much gusto not realizing how morbid it was .And, coming to think of it,  not the best way to help a child remember the days of the week! Actually, most of the childhood verses we learnt were sheer nonsense and worse still morose ;  happily alluding to misfortune and misery  like poor old  Humpty, Dumpty who couldn’t be put back together after a fall and  Jack who fell down the hill followed by his girlfriend Jill.

December,  being the wedding season, Hubby Dear and I wanted to make sure there was nothing in the offing before taking off this weekend ( part of the recuperation process). I knew there was a wedding in the extended family but wasn’t quite sure of the exact dates  so I asked the building supervisor if the wedding was on this Saturday. Shekhar scoffed at the idea and actually held his ears in the way Indians traditionally do to ward off an evil thought and told me that the wedding was on Sunday because , he emphasised, SATRURDAY was a very BAD DAY AND NO ONE HAS A WEDDING ON A SATURDAY.  I asked him how this was possible  considering every day was made by God and he told me that call it superstition or what but Saturday was also  considered inauspicious for death – if a person dies on a Saturday he is going to take two more souls from the family with him! Well nonsense of not, I was amazed to find this sentiment repeated in the ditty on  Solomon Grundy!

    Some Shani Facts

    • Saturn or Shani as he is known is one of the Nine important celestial beings or planets in Hindu astrology. As the first born son of the glorious Sun he is dark unlike his father . He is held in dread and is respected as one of the most powerful planets who can make or break your destiny.
    • Saturn returns to its original position in your horoscope from 27-30 and again from 57-60 which means vast changes in your fortune
    • Some people wear a blue sapphire to ward off the evil effects of this planet while others believe that wearing a blue sapphire is only inviting trouble.
    • Shani can play havoc in your life for 7 1/2 years when it transits from the 12th  house from the Moon to the 2nd house from the Moon as it appears in your horoscope at birth.

So Saturn or Shani, feared and revered is a hard planet to please and you would do well to have him on your side…..

  • Women & Violence

” Oh I told my son that if you go out with a girl, remember that you are not responsible for her. She is going out with you entirely at her own risk”

I was horrified when I heard Kalpana make this statement. We were two mothers watching our children play badminton at one of Mumbai‘s top clubs. Her husband was a head honcho at a multi national and she herself was one of those hot shot career women whose opinion mattered. At any rate it mattered more than mine as I was a stay at home mom, one of a dying breed. Kalpana was not only a smart, well educated and articulate woman, she was also the mother of two sons while I had two girls.

” Oh all these girls these days are too smart, ” scarcely bothering to disguise the scorn in her tone.” And let me tell you, ” she assured me , “MY son won’t do anything to any girl,  but just suppose he and his girlfriend are walking by the sea side and some one comes and accosts them what can a poor 15 year old boy do? It would make more sense for him to run. Isn’t it?”

I didn’t see the logic in this at all having grown up in an era when chivalry was not yet dead and when boys were expected to look after girls, especially if they were dating. But Kalpana went on, ” See you have daughters and I have sons. So if you don’t want your daughters to get into trouble, you should see that they stay at home. If they do go out, they are inviting trouble.”

This kind of regressive thinking was a revelation to me. I thought such ideas went out with the ark. Unfortunately there are many many Kalpanas out there in this world. While I agree with her that as a mother of a son, she would naturally have her son’s interest at heart what appalled me was the corollary that any girl who goes out is “cheap” hence her son shouldn’t risk his life for her.

Today the whole country is up in arms about the rape in our Capital City. It doesn’t matter where it took place what matters is that it happened:  a gross violation of a woman’s right to safety and a citizen’s right to free and unfettered movement . It is a sad and bitter truth that the women in our society are venerated only as Goddesses in temples and on calendar pictures, they are worshipped as mothers but treated as chattel, identified as property of the men who sire them or marry them. No matter how many women are doctors, lawyers , engineers, innovators, entrepreneurs and law makers the fact remains that a lone woman on the street is not safe.

But what will make it safe for women to walk alone on the street, or stay alone by herself? Legislation? Knowledge of self defence? There can be no simple answer because my personal belief is that punishment is no deterrent to a crime. Everyone knows that evil is punished but does that mean evil has vanished?

Castrate him who rapes a woman

So while the perpetrators of this crime should be punished ( I personally think they should be publicly castrated) the only way this crime will end is when people respect each other for being who they are and treat each other with dignity and love.

  • All it took was one moment in time for us to change our lives into fatless eating. Yes, it is possible especially when your life depends on it.

The first time ever I had fatless food was at Beena Thadani’s . Actually it was not bad, but looking at Beena’s shrivelled up little child like body and  her dark circles getting darker by the hour were enough to put me off this healthy eating lifestyle. What was the point in living I thought if food was going to be fatless and tasteless.

But all it took was really a moment, when the blood stopped going to the brain – a condition caused by the excessive fat that blocked up the arteries going there. That was a wake up call to throw out all fat from my body and my house.

It has been hard to eat food without fat . Somehow all the best things in life are fried – and life without oil seemed quite impossible. But for over a month now, we’ve banned fat from our lives and are feeling all the better for it. The skin has started glowing which possibly meant that Beena’s dark circles were genetic and not attributable to a fatless diet and our bodies are still a long way from shrinking.

I found that water makes a good substitute for oil while making “tadka” or the tempering that is characteristic of Indian food. Plus when you add in the spices, there is enough taste going round. The trick is to eat the food hot and NOT tell anyone it is fatless.

I can assure you then, that food without fat is simply fabulous – especially when you see the tires round your waist, those little love handles or that muffin top just whittle away!
