Twenty- five Seven

Personally speaking

Whatever happened to plain old sponge ! #FridayReflections

The other day I walked into a cake shop

Nostalgic for vanilla sponge .

But all I saw were cakes of chocolate

Each one more exotic than the next!

There was chocolate cake with swirls of butter cream – shaded in grades of chocolate

Ombré I was told they called it while the next had a shiny sheen of smooth ganache.

The Black Forest with its whipped cream stripes and hints of cherry on biscuit base,

While the Dutch Truffle vied for space with other different chocolate cakes .

Walnuts or just plain curls of whites chocolate or cake drizzled with coloured sprinkles

Goodness me ! There were tonnes of different chocolate cake: thick, dense, rich and dark- it simply dazzled me .

What happened to the plain buttery vanilla sponge that was the ONLY cake I ever knew ?

The old fashioned crumbly, grainy sponge that went well with cream and chocolate too!

The cake we had for tea each day because it was so ordinary.

Linking this up with Sanch and Corinne’s #FridayReflections. This was my response to this week’s prompt – Nostalgic.

  1. Aha! Mouth watery description of cakes and always loved the spongy ones which is my favorite. You are making me crave for cakes right now which is bliss to my mind.

  4. Vanilla cakes have lost their battle to all the fancy things just like all other simple things in life. Even I crave for those at times. I wish we could time-travel to such simpler and joyful things in life

    1. That’s quite an interesting observation. I didn’t really think they had lost the battle – just lost their sheen… Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Would you like to join up with a weekly #FlavoursomeTuesday sharing your foodie memory on Tuesday? Would love to have your thoughts …….

  5. Agree with you completely and I saw this yesterday. We went to a cake shop to buy a cake for my father. And we were shown all the above cakes you mentioned and there wasn’t a single vanilla cake. Vanilla cake is my all time favorite. It is simple to bake and tastes the best.
